SOUND BEAT – A trip through the history of recorded sound. The daily, 90-second radio show highlights the holdings of the Belfer Audio Archive at Syracuse University, one of the largest sound archives in the United States. Each episode focuses on one particular recording from the archive and provides a back story detailing its place in recording history.

Featured recordings come from a wide range of periods and genres. Popular and classical music performances, operatic works, and film scores are well-represented, as are those from distinctly American musical forms like jazz, bebop, country, and bluegrass. Sound Beat episodes also feature recordings from some of the great thinkers, political figures, and luminaries from the late 19th and early- to mid-20th centuries. People like Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Amelia Earhart, and Theodore Roosevelt, to name just a few.

Mara Holland is delighted to give a voice to the many environmental issues facing us today. She is especially fond of successful animal conservation scripts. And as an artist says she would enjoy giving each animal a character voice. She has been the ‘voice’ for clients like HBO and Verizon. She is also an accomplished actress whose art has included community theater, film, commercial voiceover. Her work with costuming has included creations that span the playful (Disney attractions) to the sublime (“Flower Drum Song,” Mark Taper,  Los Angeles). Editors, reporters and supporters of quality journalism will gather at the newly renovated Sheraton Universal in Universal City to see recipients honored for their work in broadcast, print and online media.

Last year, the Isla Earth Radio Series won first place in the News Bureau category at the Los Angeles Press Club’s 50th Annual Journalism Awards gala on Saturday, June 21, 2008.
